Qianwan Shanghai-Zhejiang Cooperation & Innovation Zone Comprehensive Development

Location: Jiangsu, China

Site Area: 604 sq.km.

Client: Cixi Natural Resources and Planning Bureau

The project is strategically located at the key juncture between Qianwan New Area and the central urban district of Cixi. With the imminent construction of a high-speed railway station, it is poised to become a pioneering demonstration zone for the collaborative development between Shanghai and Zhejiang in the Cixi area. It serves as a focal point for innovation driving the advancement of Cixi's industries, as well as a pioneering site bridging urban and natural environments, heralding a new era in residential practices.

The design work includes the following three levels:

•Qianwan Shanghai-Zhejiang Cooperation & Innovation Zone: the total research area is about 100 sq.km.

•Qianwan Innovation City: the area is about 16.5 sq.km.

•High-speed Rail Core Area: the area is about 0.96 sq.km.

The planning concept adheres to the principle of "Tide Pond Wisdom," delving deep into the historical context of the surrounding tidal enclosures. It involves the preservation and revitalization of existing seawalls, breathing new life into ancient ponds. Aligned with the trend of integrated development between the old city and Qianwan, the plan entails the creation of several thematic ponds: the Technology and Innovation Pond leading the city's industrial upgrade, the Cultural Heritage Pond rejuvenating memories of the old city, and the Ecological Technology Pond fostering green vitality. This planning approach aims to honor historical legacies while adapting to the future needs of urban development.

Simultaneously, the plan employs the "Riverside Connectivity" construction strategy, harnessing the existing river systems to construct a resilient urban ecological framework. Along the riverbanks, diverse and dynamic spaces will be developed, injecting new vitality into the central urban district of Cixi while seamlessly connecting to vast farmlands to the north, showcasing the unique beauty of urban-rural integration.

Through the integration of various functional components, a networked scene of "Horizontal Ponds and Vertical Rivers," characterized by diverse waterways and clear thematic identities, will be formed. This planning aims to synchronize with Qianwan, drive the development of the old city, promote harmonious coexistence between humans and nature, and create an aspirational new residential landscape in Cixi.
